“I am the vine; you are the branches.” (John 15.5)
Welcome and thank you for taking a moment to visit us online.
We are the Sisters of the Congregation of the Eucharistic Jesus. Our vocation, spirituality, and mission originate in the mystery of the Eucharist. Ignatian spirituality, which we inherited from our founder, Fr.Pranciskus Masilionis, SJ, characterizes our identity.
As an apostolic religious order we seek to assist people in their faith and life journey toward the source of all love, a love which continues to shine through the presence and deeds of the Body of Christ, the Church. As members of the Church we are committed to work for people’s wholeness and integrity in solidarity with the most vulnerable, especially women and children.
May the sisters seek to convey to each person universal salvation, i.e., the lively faith that acts in all the virtues, especially love, and the increasingly beautiful life already here on Earth. All this shall proceed from divine love and return to it.
(Fr. P. Masilionis, SJ)
History
The Congregation of the Sisters of Eucharistic Jesus was founded by the Jesuit Fr. Pranciskus Masilionis (1902–1980) in 1947, during the time of the communist persecution of Lithuania. From its institution the Congregation was active in the Catholic Church’s pastoral ministries, missionary work, and the resistance movement: the sisters were working under constant persecution, resisting the communist regime and seeking freedom of faith in the country and defending the human rights of all. Many of them were involved in the underground work of publishing The Chronicles of the Lithuanian Catholic Church and in religious education, organizing and leading religious movements for lay people such as Friends of the Eucharist, founded in 1969. The sisters were interrogated, searched, and imprisoned by the communists; however, they drew inspiration from the first Christians and continued to risk their freedom and life fearlessly. The congregation grew and spread to other countries of the former Soviet Union: Latvia, Moldova, and Kazakhstan.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union the sisters sought to find best way to respond to the needs of society and the Church in transition. The first ten years of the country’s independence were marked by the search for an authentic way to live their consecrated life and apostolic commitments in the new political and social situation. In response to the great need for spiritual leadership and the lack of religious education and formation in post-soviet society, the sisters studied in Lithuania and abroad and started projects of religious education for children, youth, and adults. During the Soviet era, they were pioneers in giving retreats to lay people. Many sisters were among the first formally trained spiritual directors; they also played a key role in the development of the current retreat programs in the countries in which they reside.
Spirituality
Our spirituality is Eucharistic and Ignatian.
The source of our spirituality is the mystery of the Eucharist, which unites all the sisters of the Congregation. „The Centre, Ruler and Commander of the Congregation is the Eucharistic Jesus.” (Pranciškus Masilionis, SJ).
Charism – self-giving love in the example of the Eucharistic Jesus.
The founder of the Congregation is Pranciškus Masilionis, SJ, and therefore a large part of its heritage is Ignatian spirituality, i.e. the experience of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola, the Ignatian principles, especially the “Magis” (“all to the greater glory of God”) and “contemplation in action”, the examination of conscience and daily personal prayer.
The Eucharist (the celebration of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus) and the devotional practices that flow from it, such as adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, are especially cherished in the Congregation. Following the Eucharistic Jesus, who gives himself in love to the end, the sisters learn concretely to live the “Magis” principle.
By participating in the Eucharistic banquet, where the life of God fills and transforms the reality of our world, the sisters are invited to live what they celebrate:
– Giving thanks to the Creator (εὐχαριστία means „thanksgiving”);
– to enter into the Easter mystery of the death and resurrection of Jesus in the reality of their lives with unquenchable hope;
– to see the Eucharistic Jesus in the pain and joy of the world, like broken bread;
– to unite ourselves to the Lord by giving ourselves more and more for the salvation of people.
Just as the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, is born through the Eucharist, so the community life of the sisters and their pastoral ministries should be born out of the spirituality of the Congregation.
Mission
„Called, consecrated and sent by God, the sisters follow Christ and engage in the mission of the evangelizing Church. By their life and apostolic activity, they bear witness to God’s love for the world and participate in the building up of the Kingdom of God.” (From the Regula)
The Congregation of the Sisters of the Eucharistic Jesus is apostolic. Contemplation in action is one of the most important aspects of the Congregation’s way of life.
The sisters are invited to work in parishes, schools, retreat houses – wherever they can be of greater service to people. The main areas of activity are evangelisation, catechesis, education, formation and pastoral care. The Sisters organise camps for children, young people and families, lead retreats, accompany people in their spiritual search, provide psychological support, prepare for the sacraments, and contribute to the organisation of Catholic events.
Friends of SJE (Lay associates)
This is a lay Catholic community founded within the Congregation of the Sisters of the Eucharistic Jesus (SJE) in 1980. It brings together those who pledges to commit to live in the spirit of the Gospel counsels according to the charism of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Eucharistic Jesus: the self-giving love in the example of Eucharistic Jesus. The Friends strive to recognize the self-giving Jesus in different situations of life. In their daily lives, the Friends commit themselves to the pursuit of holiness according to Ignatian principles, i.e. „Magis”, to be contemplative in action, and to take time daily for personal prayer and examination of conscience.
